Violence starts at a young age. Over half of children first experienced physical violence between the ages of 6 and 11 years, while approximately 1 in 10 children’s first experience is under the age of 5 years. Perpetrators are overwhelmingly people the children know: they are most likely to experience sexual violence in the perpetrator’s home, followed by their own home, at school, at someone else’s home, and on the road. Children are not speaking out, seeking, or receiving services – they are more likely to tell a friend or relative than a service provider or authority figure.
